About Me
Outsider artist, Michael Marr was born in the Chicago land area. He began his career at the age of 5. Keeping his drawings and sketches in numbered books, carefully arranged throughout his mothers house. He began carving at the age of 10, when given a small penknife. After living on the east coast and touring Europe for several years, courtesy of the U.S. Navy, Michael returned to the Chicago area. While employed at a local department store, he met and married Victoria. A new job at a costume rental agency is where he learned to sew and design costumes for various productions. Children soon occupied most of his time. Another new job, working 3rd shift, allowed him to become a stay at home dad and start a new series of drawings. These drawings and watercolors were of women in various fashion poses. January 2000 brought about another change for the family. A job opportunity opened up for Victoria in Wisconsin. Packing up the family and moving to Two Rivers was a big decision. Victoria’s position allowed Michael to once again become a stay at home and pursue his artistic career. A series of ideas soon became drawings and then carvings. He began showing his work for the first time. After several false starts, his passion has once again returned to his favorite subject, women. The first series is entitled "Beast Women" these involved various women combined with animals. These watercolors delved into the complex psyche of females. The current series entitled "Pieces of a woman" uses acrylic paintings on several canvases at once. This series explores the physical, artistic, and underlying power of the female body.

My Work
There are currently 3 series of paintings under the theme "Pieces of a woman"
PIECES:
The first series entitled "Pieces" portrays various women on separate panels. Most of these are done on canvas board, but I've since switched to stretched canvas. I ran out of canvas board.
SKIN DEEP:
The second series entitled "Skin Deep" portrays 10 different women. These show the underlying muscles on half of their bodies. These are watercolors and ink done on watercolor paper the size of a cigarette pack. A difficult change from the larger sizes of acrylics I'm working on.
THE DEMON WITHIN:
The current series entitled "The Demon within" are large acrylics done on multiple canvases. These also portray various women and the underlying muscles and sometimes even the bones.These works are being done 3D, in that I mount the canvases at different depths from the wall, so that the overlapping areas show the muscle tone, and if there is a third layer the bones. These painting include the demon all women (and men) hold in check. the multiple layers presents it's own problems, in that I need to mount the canvases to sketch and paint, but I also need to be able to remove canvas at certain times in order to paint the underlying area.

Dear Michael, about the vending machine art I would like to inform you that I just bought a work of yours called SKIN DEEP (portraits of a woman). It was in a vending machine in THE COSMOPOLITAN hotel in Vegas and my wife and I loved it. It is now being displayed in my house (livingroom)and stands perfectly on a black glass table I have to entertain guests.
